UNIKA is a compact, lightweight preload device for Hold Down and Release Mechanisms on spacecraft. It delivers up to 50 kN of controlled preload in a cleanroom-ready, handheld format—built for solar-array tunnels, constrained integration zones, and other difficult-to-access locations.
Preload is generated electronically by controlled heating of a Shape Memory Alloy in a force-feedback loop using an integrated load cell. With no fluid, grease, or heavily loaded friction interfaces, UNIKA provides clean operation, data record, and dependable force control wherever precise HDRM tightening is needed. The development was presented at ESMATS 2025
